For half a decade, PC and notebook fans have been waiting for a generation leap in processors. Now it is finally here – and comes somewhat unexpectedly from the underdog AMD.

We explain how this could happen and give you recommendations for whom which processor is most worthwhile. But first of all, we want to show you why AMD’s comeback is coming – and not a matter of course.

AMD’s long way back to the top

Mobile processors have been coming from more than one manufacturer for a long time, but only buying a notebook with an Intel CPU made sense for people who wanted the ultimate in performance for a long time.

The main competitor from the desktop, AMD, took over in 2009 to purchase the then graphics card giant ATI and sank more and more into insignificance. In 2010, Intel gave AMD the supposed death blow with its then ultra-modern Core I processors. The new CPUs from the market leader were faster and more efficient than the offers from the much smaller company AMD.

But by equipping consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, AMD restructured itself over the next few years under CEO Lisa Su’s leadership. The company invested a large part of its profits in the research and development of new chipsets – and that should pay off. Because in 2017, the result of years of work finally came to light with Zen architecture.

The AMD comeback with Zen

The AMD Zen architecture with its Ryzen 1000 CPUs was – compared to its large competitor Intel – at least within reach again and was able to inspire creative and high-performance users with its excellent multi-core performance. Still, Intel maintained its lead in gaming performance.

This was due, among other things, to the higher clock rates of the Intel processors, but also their very high IPC. The latter denotes the instructions per clock cycle. It doesn’t sound effortless, but it’s actually quite easy to explain: Because a processor always runs through a set of instructions, and the clock rate indicates how often and how quickly an instruction set can run through the processor. The IPC, on the other hand, describes how much “work” there is in an instruction set. If you multiply the clock rate with the IPC, you get roughly the respective processor’s single-core performance.

AMD Zen 2 changes everything

And AMD had to put back a long time with this single-core performance. But that should change in 2019. With the Zen-2 architecture and the Ryzen 3000 processors, 7nm manufacturing technology found its way into the desktop for the first time and gave the market leader a lot of trouble. Thanks to the more modern manufacturing process, AMD’s engineers were able to double the number of Ryzen processor cores to 16 and even increase their CPUs’ efficiency.

Meanwhile, the dominant company with the “i” had supposedly rested in its position. Although huge sums of money are invested in research and development, it has not been possible to establish a new production process since 2015. Since then, the desktop market leader has been relying on 14nm technology and has only released incremental upgrades. The successor in 10nm never made it beyond the notebook market. However, it could only be used with more energy-saving devices and never made it into absolute high-performance laptops.

Efficient and powerful – finally also in the notebook

The high-performance CPUs in the notebook are still based on a five-year-old technology at Intel. AMD is now turning the previous situation in the notebook market on its head. With Ryzen 4000 (code name: Renoir), it delivers the most modern and fastest processors in all performance classes – and as a much smaller company, the supposed underdog. In this case, modern also means efficient because, with Ryzen 4000, there are eight-core processors with massive performance and battery life in gaming notebooks that are otherwise only known from economically equipped ultrabooks.

The Asus ROG G14 Zephyrus with Ryzen 7 4800HS made it into our test, for example, battery life of over ten hours. But AMD also has something for the ultra-mobile form factor: The Ryzen 4000U series is available with a TDP of 15 to 25 watts. These also bring integrated graphics units with them, which with AMD’s Vega architecture in 7nm, rank well above all other APUs. Vega is already a few years old, but by shrinking to the 7nm process, it could also gain a lot of performance and is now sufficient for many games in 1080p resolution.

AMD’s Ryzen 4000U series will primarily be used in highly portable laptops and business notebooks. But already here you can expect a lot of performance for the money. Another special feature of the U processors is that only some models support multi-threading. This is especially important for CPU-intensive applications. Thanks to its 50% higher thread count, the Ryzen 4600U should outperform the supposedly stronger 4700U in some applications.

If you want maximum CPU performance in a small form factor, choose the multi-threading models – 4600U or 4800U. Do you belong to the gambler’s faction and still want a notebook that is as handy as possible with long battery life? Then Ryzen 4700U and 4500U are your models because these bring hardly any weaker gaming performance than the larger versions.

The 4800U naturally offers the best gaming and CPU performance by far. Only it has multi-threading and the strongest Vega8 graphics unit. However, that does not mean that you are necessarily worse served with a 4700U in everyday life. Even with eight cores and threads, you will be well catered for in games and applications for the foreseeable future. If you need video and image processing in the smallest form factor and gaming performance is secondary, then the AMD Ryzen 4600U is actually the price-performance decision for you.

The HS chips are exclusively available in ASUS devices: They are supposed to combine the best of two – actually opposing worlds -: gaming performance and mobility. As we were able to determine in our test of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, the notebooks have a high-quality feel and appearance. Thanks to their extremely long battery life, they also have massive performance and are also ideal as daily companions for university and office.

But the HS models are also ideally suited for use as a workstation that is as portable as possible. So if you want to do photo or video editing, thanks to the processors’ multi-threading capability, this is still possible with the AMD Ryzen 4600HS.

However, the price-performance tip is the Ryzen 7 4800HS: It is hardly slower than the Ryzen 9 4900HS, has the same number of cores and threads, and only has a slightly weaker graphics unit. In the HS models, you usually get a dedicated GPU – and these are anyway more powerful than even the most powerful integrated Vega2 model.

Last but not least, there are, of course also classic, large gaming laptops with AMD Ryzen 4000 processors. These are equipped with the H series, which are allowed to approve up to 45W. The CPUs are already available on cheaper laptops than their HS counterparts because, in contrast to these, they have more space available and have not been specially selected.

In return, you can expect desktop-level performance from the AMD Ryzen 4600H. This means that the CPUs are at the top desktop processors of recent years in terms of both multi-core and single-core performance – and that with much lower consumption. Here, all variants are again equipped with multi-threading and are very suitable as workhorses for photo and video editing.

The integrated graphics units are – just like the HS variants – only accessories, since all notebooks with AMD Ryzen 4000H processors available so far also come with a dedicated graphics card. Paired with a decent GPU – from Nvidia GeForce 1660 Ti – you are out and about in Full HD in almost all current titles with over 60 pictures.

Now you know the processors and know for whom they are suitable: Do you use your laptop a lot on the go and need a portable device without wanting to compromise on performance? Then the notebooks with AMD Ryzen 4000U are perfect for you.

If, on the other hand, you are a heavy user, edit videos and pictures, but also want to use your laptop a lot on the go, then a model with an AMD Ryzen 4000HS CPU is recommended. The HS processors are priced a little higher than their 4000H cousins, but they offer an incredible amount of power for the go – which also lasts for the entire working day. So they are absolute all-rounders.

But if you are primarily concerned with gaming and application performance and portability is a minor matter, you should opt for a notebook with an AMD 4000H CPU. These offer a little more performance than the already powerful HS models but are cheaper and come in larger laptops from 15.6 inches. Here you really get the spearhead in current notebook performance – and still, get battery life that is far above the laptops of the competition.

Thanks to their modern 7nm production, AMD Ryzen 4000 CPUs bring unprecedented efficiency and performance classes to laptops. So if you want to have the latest technology, which goes hand in hand with the longest battery life and a performance that until recently could only be found on the desktop, then get a notebook with an AMD Ryzen 4000 CPU.
